What exactly is Vanilla?
Vanilla comes from orchids of the genus Vanilla. Vanilla orchids originally came from Mexico and Guatemala. The most commonly used orchid is the Vanilla Planifolia. The vanilla pod is also often called the vanilla bean when unripe. They are then immersed in hot water. Then they are dried under the sun for a long period of time. After drying, you get a vanilla pod containing thousands of tiny black seeds, also called the pith. Moreover, vanilla is a stunningly complex and subtle spice with over 250 different flavour and fragrance components.
The difference between flavouring and extract
Extract is obtained from natural vanilla pods, the true natural and original product. An aroma consists of synthetic vanillin, the flavouring substance that provides the typical taste and smell.
