Star anise
Would you like to make your homemade dishes even more flavourful? Then consider using aniseed or star anise. At Baktotaal.com you will find a wide selection of aniseed and star anise in various quantities and from different brands.
What is anise?
Aniseed is a spice originally from the Middle East and belongs to the parsley family. This family also includes fennel, celery, coriander, dill and parsley. Anise has a distinctive flavour, which gives that characteristic taste to sugared aniseed sprinkles traditionally served on rusks and to spiced biscuits such as pepernoten. Drinks such as ouzo and sambuca are also flavoured with anise. You can use anise to flavour a variety of treats, including breads, biscuits, cakes and pies. It can even be added to puddings, stewed fruit and rice.
What is star anise?
Star anise does not grow on a plant, but on a tree. These trees are mainly found in Asian countries such as Cambodia and Laos. This spice is therefore widely used in Asian cuisine to flavour stews and soups, among other dishes. Star anise gets its name from its star-shaped pods. The flavour comes from the husk of these pods. It is also one of the components of the well-known Chinese five-spice powder, which consists of cinnamon, star anise, pepper, fennel and cloves.
How do you use star anise?
Star anise is not eaten on its own but added to a dish to impart flavour. Before serving, the star anise should be removed. In this respect, it can be compared to bay leaves. Star anise can also be incorporated into cakes, biscuits and spiced treats to enhance their flavour.
What is the difference between star anise and anise?
Although star anise and anise share almost the same name, they are different products. Aniseed is a spice from a plant, while star anise is a spice derived from a tree. In addition, the flavour of star anise comes mainly from the husk rather than the seeds. Star anise is too hard to eat as it is, although it can be crushed or infused. Aniseed can be used whole or ground. In terms of flavour, aniseed and star anise are similar, but star anise has a more intense taste. As star anise contains a higher concentration of anethole than aniseed, it has a stronger and slightly more bitter flavour.
