Which biscuits can you use for a cake base?
Almost any biscuits can be used to make a biscuit base for cakes. However, it is important that the biscuits are not filled.

- Oreo biscuits without the filling

How can you crush biscuits?
To make a cake base using biscuits, it is important to crush the biscuits well first. The finer the biscuits are ground, the smoother the cake base will be. There are several ways to crush biscuits. You can grind biscuits very well in a food processor or with a hand blender. Don’t have those at hand? Then you can also use a rolling pin. Place the biscuits in a freezer bag and seal the bag. Crush the biscuits with the rolling pin. You can place a tea towel underneath the bag if you want to protect your work surface from the rolling pin. You could even grind biscuits using a mortar and pestle, but this is only practical if you need to crush just a few biscuits. If you need to crush many biscuits, using a mortar will take quite a long time.
Can you crush biscuits in a blender?
You cannot crush dry biscuits in a blender. Biscuits can only be blended if you add a liquid. However, this is not practical when making a biscuit base, because the only liquid you need is butter. Butter will quickly spread throughout the blender, which is why we do not recommend using this appliance to grind biscuits.
How can you make a biscuit base?

To make a biscuit cake base, you only need two ingredients: crushed biscuits and unsalted butter. The best ratio is 100 grams of biscuits to 25 grams of butter. Melt the butter in a small saucepan and remove the pan from the heat as soon as the butter has melted. Quickly stir in the crushed biscuits and make sure the two ingredients are well combined. Pour the mixture into a cake tin lined with baking parchment and spread it evenly across the base of the tin. It works very well to do this using the back of a spoon. Leave the crumb biscuit base to set in the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes before continuing.

What can you do once you have made the biscuit base?
Once you have made the biscuit base, you should let it set in the refrigerator for 10 minutes. In the meantime, you can prepare the filling for the cake. Usually, the entire cake then needs to be refrigerated for at least 4 hours to allow the filling to set as well. After that, you can decorate and serve the cake as desired.
