In 1 minute:
Nuts make a tasty snack, but they’re also a great addition to your baking. You can roast them in the oven, in a pan, or even in an air fryer! Roasting them releases their natural oils, making the nuts crispier and more flavourful.
What are the different ways to toast nuts?
There are several ways to toast nuts. There is always a method you can use at home. Below, we explain the different options:
Toasting nuts in the oven
Toasting nuts in the oven ensures that the heat is distributed evenly. You can toast a large quantity of nuts in the oven. Make sure to turn the nuts halfway through, otherwise they may burn.
Toasting nuts in an air fryer
Toasting nuts in an air fryer is ideal for quickly preparing smaller portions. Preheat the air fryer to 150 °C and spread a single layer of nuts in the basket. Toast them for 6–10 minutes, depending on the size of the nuts. Shake the basket regularly to prevent burning and voilà : delicious toasted nuts!
Toasting nuts in a pan
No oven or air fryer? No problem. You can also toast nuts in a pan. Use a dry frying pan and heat it over medium heat. Add the nuts and stir them regularly. They will be ready within 5–10 minutes. The advantage of toasting in a pan is that you can closely monitor the process, but the downside is that the nuts may not colour evenly.
How long should you toast nuts in the oven?
Many nuts can be toasted at 175 °C for 10 minutes, but each type of nut is different. The nuts listed below require different timings:

Why toast nuts?
Nuts are already flavourful on their own, but toasting releases their natural oils. This results in a more intense flavour and a crisp texture. In addition, toasting enhances their aroma and makes them easier to incorporate into recipes such as salads, bakes or granola.
What is the difference between roasting and frying nuts?
When toasting nuts, no oil is used; the nuts are simply dry-toasted in the oven or in a pan. When frying nuts, oil is added. During frying, you can also add spices or sugar to give the nuts extra flavour.
Toasting nuts with spices
To give nuts extra flavour, you can season them yourself with spices. Salt and pepper are already delicious, but other spices can create unique flavour combinations. For example, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper are perfect for drinks and nibbles. Italian herbs, honey or chilli-ginger can also give your nuts a surprising twist.
Which nuts can you toast?
Almost all nuts can be toasted! Think of popular varieties such as hazelnuts, walnuts, pistachios and cashews. Seeds such as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and pine nuts can also be toasted. Perfect as a topping for a cake or as a tasty snack!
